Less than 2 in 10 Wirral children are active for 30 minutes or less every day

According to the 2018 Active Lives of children and young people survey, just 15.9% of Wirral children are active daily for 30 minutes or less.

Recent findings suggest that more than 65% of North West children surveyed said they would be inspired to be more physically active if they saw their favourite characters being active.

The research, released by Public Health England, coincides with a regional and national launch of the Change4Life ‘10 Minute Shake Up’ program to inspire children to get more active, especially during the summer holidays.

With compelling research suggesting that enjoyment motivates children and young people to get active, Change4Life have again partnered with Disney UK to create a series of online games, activities, recipes and more to encourage families with young children to get active outside of school, at home or in local parks.

The games include characters from tonnes of family-favourite Disney characters including Toy Story, Frozen, Tangled and more and are completely free to access in Wirral.

Speaking of the launch Cllr Christine Jones, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Health, said: “Along with keeping fit and healthy, evidence shows that children and young people who are more active have more confidence, higher self-esteem and less anxiety. These are all things that can help them deal with the challenges they face in daily life.

“The Change4Life scheme is being rolled out across Wirral schools, encouraging children and families to get active – and have fun while they’re doing it."

As part of the campaign, Change4Life with Disney are providing primary schools with new curriculum-linked resources containing fun and flexible ways to get children active throughout the school day.

To encourage children and inspire parents to continue these Shake Up activities at home and keep active over the summer, a take-home pack featuring 12 new 10 Minute Shake Up games will be distributed to thousands of primary schools across the country.

Once pupils have completed their 10 Minute Shake Up activities over the summer, teachers can also reward them with Change4Life certificates.

Cllr Jones continued: “And of course there are options for in and outdoor activity even over the summer – a must for Wirral residents in our sometimes-sunny peninsula!”
