Back to school statement from Councillor Tom Usher

20 August, 2020

Wirral childcare, early years providers and schools are preparing to welcome back all children and young people from September, when education will once again be compulsory.

Councillor Tom Usher Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, said:

“I understand this may cause concern for some parents. However, I can assure you that all providers and schools supported by the council have worked tirelessly over the last few months to ensure the safety of your children. Work on the wider reopening has been meticulous, and follows guidance published by Public Health England and the Government.

“As we’re all too aware, COVID-19 has brought with it many challenges - not least of which the impact it’s had on our children and young people’s education.

“I am confident that all our providers and schools have done everything possible to make sure your child will be in a COVID secure environment. I’m proud of the dedication shown by all those involved, who have done everything they can to make sure all our children can be reunited with their friends and enjoy their education and learning once again.

“Over the next week, you child’s setting or school will be in touch to let you know the specific arrangements for their return at the start of September. All settings will have their own individual plans in place - but all will be focused on the return of your child.

“Alongside our colleagues in Public Health, we have prepared some frequently asked questions and answers which we hope will be helpful for parents and carers. You can read these at wirral.gov.uk/backtoschool. “

Thank you

Wirral Council’s Children’s Services team would like to thank parents, carers, schools and pupils for how they have dealt with and adapted to the challenges brought by Coronavirus.

Time in school is about more than just lessons, it helps to develop children ‘all round’ – increasing their communication skills, discovering new talents, and making friends for the future.
